How to Stain Wood with Osmo Oil Stain: A Step-by-Step Guide

  • Step-by-Step Instructions:

    1.Surface Preparation 

    Clean old microporous stains thoroughly. Old paints and lacquers must be completely removed. As a general rule, wear a dust mask during sanding works. Fill small cracks, larger joints or holes in wood (with Osmo Wood Filler). Sand wood surfaces carefully. Begin with coarse sandpaper – final sanding work for flooring P120-150, for furniture P220-240. Before oiling the surface, remove sanding dust with a broom or vacuum. The finished surface is, among other things, influenced by the wood‘s natural characteristics. Therefore, a trial application is always required, especially for unfamiliar surfaces.

  2. Choose the Right Environment:

    • Ensure you're working in a well-ventilated area. Ideal conditions Wood surface must be clean, dry and frost-free (moisture content max. 18%). are between 15-30°C (59-86°F) with low humidity for optimal drying.

  3. Stir the Osmo Oil Stain:

    • Open the can of Osmo Oil Stain and stir it gently to mix the pigments evenly. Avoid excessive agitation which can create bubbles.
    • Osmo Oil Stain is ready to use, please do not thin.

  4. Apply the Stain:

                  using a brush or roller, apply a generous amount of the Osmo Oil Stain to the                      wood. Work in sections to maintain a wet edge and prevent overlap marks.

      • After applying the stain, wipe off any excess with a clean cloth to avoid a sticky finish. This step is crucial to prevent blotchiness.   For a more uniform color, apply evenly in the direction of the wood grain.
      • Allow the first coat to dry for about 24 hours. Depending on the ambient conditions, drying times may vary.
      • If you desire a deeper color, apply a second coat using the same method. Ensure the first coat is completely dry before adding another layer.
      • After the final coat has dried, inspect the finish. If a smoother surface is desired, lightly sand with fine-grit sandpaper and clean away dust before applying a final coat
      • The stain will continue to cure and harden over a few days, providing increased durability. Try to avoid heavy use during this initial period.
